A Serial Device Server (sometimes called a serial-to-Ethernet converter) is a standalone network device that allows legacy serial industrial equipment—such as PLCs, CNC machines, barcode scanners, meters, and sensors—to communicate directly with a local area network (LAN) or the internet over TCP/IP.
By transforming standard serial data (RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485) into standard TCP/IP packets, these units enable remote configuration, monitoring, and data acquisition from legacy instruments without requiring costly infrastructure replacements.
